What affects insurance premiums?

When you buy a life insurance policy, insurance companies are at risk. The premiums may include pre calculations to cover them in case you die early. Thus, the insurers do not need to pay a larger death benefit to your beneficiaries than you have paid in every month.

While calculating your premiums, insurance companies consider the reasons that can lead to your early death. They think about existing medical conditions that can get worse in the future. Their other concerns are: overweight, high cholesterol, tobacco and alcohol use and poor health. Your health, age and gender will determine the amount of your premiums in the chosen life insurance company.

You will be given a questionnaire concerning your health and lifestyle to let the company know all the risks. The questionnaire is filled out with complete honesty. You have to provide all information about seeing your doctor, names, dates, diagnosis and treatments. If you hide a medical condition and die because of that particular condition, it can become a problem for your beneficiaries. An insurance company will not pay death benefits because they were unaware of your illness. If you lie about the medical condition and the insurance company finds out, they may cancel your policy.

You cannot control all factors that insurance companies consider. For example, you can't control your age and gender. A person who is younger pays less than someone in middle age. It is known that women live longer, thus their premiums are usually lower than men's. Lifestyle plays an important role too. If you like extreme, adrenaline driven activities, you will pay more on your premiums than the usual person.

After the life insurance questionnaire, you may be required to go through a physical exam. All necessary information about your health is collected before they sign you up as a policyholder. A medical exam is similar to a usual checkup, but some extra tests may also be included. You may be asked to go through blood and urine test. These tests allow insurers to find out whether you take illegal drugs or have HIV infection. Sometimes an EKG can be performed in order to check your stress level.

You may stop or slow down unhealthy lifestyle. It is up to you to decrease the amount of cigarettes you smoke or lose weight. Go through medical treatments regularly if you have a chronic disease. You undoubtedly need will power, documented progress and a great wish to save money on your life insurance and, possibly, your life.
