Think about long-term care insurance policy until it is too late.

Under long-term one should understand many services apart from medical and nursing care for people with disabilities or chronic diseases. With long-term care insurance you feel confident as you can pay for these services, which, otherwise, would be intolerable and very expensive. A policy also guarantees that it is you and only you who make a choice what long-term care services you get and where you get them.

Usual health insurance won't cover all these expenditures. People tend to live longer nowadays. On the one hand, that's good news, but on the other hand, there are more risky years when people can face serious health problems. And these years can cost all your savings. As it has been said, usual health insurance policies and Medicare do not reimburse you for long-term care expenses. Medicaid, which is a federal/state health insurance program, will only compensate long-term care if most of your savings have already been spent. So, what remains for you - is long-term care insurance.

What costs does long-term care insurance typically cover?

It usually covers:

  • Assistance with everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, cleaning, toileting or continence, and/or transferring in your home
  • Adult day care - special community programs
  • Assisted living services offered in an organized residential setting. These services provide meals, medical examination, and assistance with everyday activities.
  • Nurses' visits.
  • Nursing home care.

When should I buy long-term care insurance policy?

Many people do not care about this type of policy until they are in their 70s or 80s when their health worsens considerably. But at these ages, you represent a high risk for an insurance provider and they may not want to cover you; in case you do qualify, you may be imposed astronomical premiums. Moreover, there are long-term care policies that have restrictions based on age and health condition.

Thus, the most suitable time for buying long-term care insurance is middle-age. At this time you are likely to be desirable for a policy and, of course, premiums will be lower.
