Choose Renter's Insurance wisely.

When you rent a flat or a house, the owner usually has insurance coverage on the dwelling itself, but that coverage won't cover the cost of your personal belongings if something happens, like a fire or discharge of water. You will protect yourself, if you take out a renter's insurance policy. It won't cost much, only $10-$20 a month, but you'll not worry as you will know that your clothes, furniture and other possessions will be replaced if they are damaged or stolen. It may happen that you won't be able to replace everything yourself.

Below there are the instructions how to get renter's insurance.

  • Think of the amount of coverage you need. Write down everything you possess and estimate how much you would spend buying it all new if you lost everything. Guessing leads to underestimating. It's difficult to realize just how much everything you have may cost.
  • Try to find companies that provide renter's insurance in your area. An online search for "renter's insurance" plus your zip code will be really helpful. Having several variants will let you shop around for competitive prices. Remember that the cheapest company is not necessary the best company, that is why it is good to investigate aną find out the company's reputation taking into account customers' satisfaction.
  • Submit the application. You will have to write about details such as the age of your house, the type of construction, and roof composition. Your landlord will not refuse to furnish you with all the information necessary. You'll also have to find the answers to questions about the kind of fire alarm system in the building, about the nearest fire and police departments, and many others relating to the place you live in.
  • Select your deductible, it is the sum of money you could afford to pay if some damage to your possessions or theft happens. If you choose a higher deductible, you will get a lower monthly premium.
  • It is a good idea to create a video or photo inventory of your possessions but do not forget where you store it. In case you need to file a claim, it will help you much. You may also write down the serial numbers of the things that have them, for example, your laptop. This will add credibility to your claim and may help the police recover your things in case of theft.
  • Read your policy carefully. After your application has been accepted and your first payment has been made, a copy of your policy will be given to you. Check that your policy has the correct deductible and coverage amounts. If you have any doubts or questions, contact the insurance company as quickly as possible.
